An open Letter to Star Sports Asia (esp. Korea)

JFTR, F1 driver and Aussie Mark Webber, who qualified in 3rd, stuffed up his start as per usual, dropping back to 8th before Aussie-grittinging it back to 2nd, behind that Vettel guy.

And well done, Jenson (13th to 3rd!) And Schumi (last…24th…to 5th… on the 43 year old’s 20th anniversary of F1 racing).

And a happy birthday to Aussie Mark Webber who turned 35 on Saturday.

But what’s a post without a beef?

Here’s what Star Sports (ESPN) was emailed minutes ago…

Hi,

Who’s the idiot who decided to put the Star Sports Korea commentary into Chinese???? I am so absolutely LIVID! at you guys. It’s so hard to be polite, but what kind of broadcast is one that has a pre-race show in English, the bloody race in Chinese, and then the post race show in English?

What the hell were you guys thinking?!?!?!?

You did this (even worse) back in 2002. Essentially, you ruined the season!

Most of your letters are from fans in India. What do you think their main second language is?????? Hint: IT”S NOT CHINESE!

How about where you broadcast from? Hong Kong, too!

And as for foreign workers in Korea???

They are English teachers.

They are also engineers etc. from all over the world who use ENGLISH as a first or second language!!!!!!!

What’s even more of an utterly stupid decision, the races before the summer break had English commentary (volume not sufficient to get above the engine noise, by the way).

And suddenly you switch to Chinese???

English is the language of international business!

Most foreign workers in Korea AND Koreans use English as either their first or second language!

I understand your coverage pales in comparison to the BBC, but I blame that more on resources ($$$) provided… that is: YOU HAVE GOOD COMMENTATORS but who’d know since you have decided again to hush them up?

So utterly angry, disappointed, and wondering why you pulled such a ridiculous stunt!

I want to use every swear word I know against you – and you deserve all of them plus more – but I won’t.

FIX THIS!

If you vomit Monza on us in Chinese, I will officially hate you forever!!!

You fucked up so bad!

Sincerely,

James Board

where did you email it to? I am equally upset … and now I’m trying to watch the Motogp coverage it’s in Chinese too! Just not sure who exactly to complain to. Is it Star or do Skylife decide which feed to take?

    • I emailed f1@espnstar.com

    • As for your last question, that’s a good one and I’m not sure. I’ll ask Korean wifey to call up Qook and/or SkyLife to ask when she’s in a better mood.

Yep, saw that with the bikes, too.

How’s this but, flicked it on the other day and the GP2 was had English commentary. Gee, thanks, guys.

  1. I can only imagine Slater in Chinese…lol…In Malaysia, they advertised the live qualifying from Spa then at the last minute pulled it in favour of some footballing crap. Don’t get me started on commercial breaks every 4 or 5 laps during the race…its so bad now that I have decided to dump Star Sports and plug in my laptop and stream the race from the BBC.
Do Star Sports ever reply to written complaints??

    • It’s a shocker isn’t it? I tried streaming but myp2peu is down and it wasn’t easy finding something new on the fly… not to mention it’d cut out periodically.

      Where do you goto?

      Ad breaks=ditto times a million.

The thing is, the most number of Chinese in Korea are bought wives of Korean farmers (unequal male/female ration and no modern Korean city-girl wants to be any near a farm) who one doubt are that into F1. Thus, just what demographic are the idiots thinking they’re appealing to (again)?

As for any reply, so far zilch.

      • LOL (not), found this.

So, they showed it right-to-left and back-to-front? Did it unwind properly?

    Cheers

    • No, but it had me pretty wound up!

    Brief, yet to the point.

    Well done that man 🙂

    • Expert commentary adds so much to a race, but I’d rather have none compared to having to sit through an hour and a half of two Chinese clowns crapping on…

Anyone who is remotely interested in that Stat Dec causing Andrew some drama this week, can see it in its entirety here:

Apparently, I will have to go and have a look now. download the pdf.

    • Ahh, yes. Juliar successfully managed to block Kernohan’s interview on 2UE on Monday, but Bolta is suggesting it may be aired today.

Did you hear she’s also chucking a hissy fit at people protesting saying it’s becoming to “American” – a country she described as “a beacon of Democracy” only a few months ago (you know, when she got the sniffles talking about putting a man on the moon).

Does this mean she’d like GetUp! shut down?

      😛
